Janine Micheletti (she/her), also known as J9, is a native New Yorker and street fusion choreographer. She graduated from SUNY Purchase’s School of Art & Design with a concentration in photography. Thereafter, she has spent most of her professional life as a visual artist and accomplished textile designer. In 2009, she began taking dance classes again as a hobby. The art form quickly enraptured her as it did as a child, and since she has pursued it with fierce abandon. This dedication has led her to being selected for the Breaking Glass emerging female choreographers program run by Ellenore Scott, with mentorship from Rhapsody James. Since she has shown her work at Alvin Ailey, MMAC, Highline Ballroom, and more. In 2016 she produced her own show called Street Spectrum, a platform for all different street artists in New York City at TADA! Theater. She is director of her own company, J9dance. Some brands/artists she has worked with include Squarespace, G. Wilson Activewear, Rica Shay, Ephrat Asherie Dance, Jamie J. Invitation Company, Makeout Club at House of Yes, MTV, Jennifair, and New Politics with Fallout Boy.
Janine’s current focus is working towards blending her knowledge from visual art with dance. Her main work is centered around telling stories through fusing street styles and digital technology. She has a deep interest in commercial dance and how it relates back to the roots of genre specific street styles. This interest directly relates to how she teaches her classes.
