Jack Hertzog received his training from the School of American Ballet where he studied with Andrew Eglevski, Alexandra Danilova, and Stanley Williams, among others. He was a principal dancer at the Metropolitan Opera Company from 1967-1988, where he worked with Dame Alicia Markova, Alvin Ailey, George Balanchine, and Anthony Tudor, dancing the leading roles in such opera ballets as Aida, Adriana Lecouvreur, Faust, La Gioconda, Samson et Dalila, and La Traviata. In Dance Pages 01/10/87 Nina Russell said Jack Hertzog was "thoroughly versed in classical ballet" and his dancing had "...speed and virtousity...combined with impeccable timing...enormous flexibility of technique, perfect control and presentation."
His teaching has included classes at the Metropolitan Opera Ballet Company, David Howard School, Broadway Dance Center, and other locations, as well as Master classes at the New York Dance Congress. The New York Resident recently wrote, "Jack Hertzog is patient, kind, knowledgeable, and guides his students through the basics to build a firm foundation for the future."

The class focuses not only on the dancers technical development but on artistry, stressing the use of the head and of port de bras, for example, in responding to music rather than as ends in themselves. Combinations are choreographed to enhance the dancer's individual expressive qualities. Thus the class is soundly structured and designed to facilitate movement. Technique serves artistry in combinations that encourage the dancer to dance.
