Ali Dietz from Buffalo, NY, where she grew up training under the direction of her mother, Mary Alice Dietz, at Mary Alice's Dance Studio. Ali is an alumni of The School at Jacob's Pillow, has worked with Dorrance Dance, and is honored to be on faculty at NYCDA. Ali performed at Spoleto Festival USA, New York City Center in the Fall for Dance Festival, and in concert with Dorrance Dance. She has studied with, and is personally inspired by Michelle Dorrance, Derick K. Grant, Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Nicholas Young, Jared Grimes, and Jason Samuels Smith.
The history of the art form is incredibly important to her and she spent last summer studying Race, Gender, and Jazz in American History at Yale University. Ali currently lives in New York City, where she continues to teach, choreograph, and study tap dance. She travels quite frequently to set work and teach workshops throughout the country. The accomplishment Ali is the most proud of is being the founder of Dancers Give Back, a now international non-profit organization. Since its inception DGB has raised over $815k towards cancer research and patient support, and has a hand in ground breaking research for blood disorders.

Tap Dance is not just physical, it is musical. I try to stay true to the history of the art form, as well as meet the students where they are at in their technique and where they are trying to go. My class is symbiotic, and my goal is to try to help every student inch closer to their goals by the end of our time together that day. It is a welcoming and warm environment and in large part focuses on the function of movement and weight shift. It's my goal to have everyone leave feeling seen, challenged, and encouraged.
